Online Personal Branding

Personal branding has become a buzz word in the marketing industry, but all trends aside, it is important for communication professionals to have a signature style in order to further advance their career. Before Web 2.0, personal branding was limited to word of mouth and your resume, maybe a printed-out portfolio if you were into design or writing. For the past several years, personal branding has gone social and found success in platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Beyond the social networking sites, personal websites, vlogs, podcasts, and more have found their place in the online personal branding environment. Gary Vaynerchuk explains “pillar content” or long-form audio and video as a driver for what will become your brand and set the tone for other content.

Not only is it important to produce your own content, but it’s also imperative to research your online persona and keep tabs on what is being said about you on their internet. A simple Google search will reveal what your name is ranking for and prove that social media and content creation is the backbone for your personal branding strategy (Lee, 2016). Technology has enabled marketing professionals to continually monitor where their name is mentioned facilitating further online engagement and networking. Tools like Mention and utilizing email notifications from social media sites like Facebook and LinkedIn can help marketers stay on top of mentions and backlinks to their website, portfolios, and blogs.

Beyond the tried and true tactics such as using LinkedIn to network with other professionals online, many marketers are turning to Facebook groups for a community of like-minded individuals with whom they can gain insight from and position themselves as a thought-leader in their industry. Beyond that, Lee offers strategies such as gaining mentors, getting questions to work answers, and created a network that will help you become the best version of yourself.
